Welcome to Downers Grove

Picturesque small-town lifestyle with every convenience.

Just outside of Chicago lies one of the most desirable suburban areas imaginable. Consistently ranked in the top ten places to live in all of Illinois, Downers Grove has become the “it” community for young professionals who want all the beauty and serenity of small-town life without having to give up any of the conveniences found in the big city.

Initially founded by Pierce Downer in 1832, the area was once a farming community. However, when the railroad lines were extended to Chicago through Downers Grove in 1864, the population began to see significant population growth, and the town was incorporated in 1873. Since that time, Downers Grove has become something of a business hub where local, regional, and national businesses can make their mark.

What to Love

People & Lifestyle

The many advantages of living in this community have attracted a varied population made up of young professionals, families, and retirees looking to settle down. The majority of the population holds a bachelor's degree or higher, and almost all work white-collar jobs or hold management positions. As a result, the median annual income for a home in Downers Grove is significantly higher than the national average.

During their time off, residents tend to enjoy coming together as a community, whether by wandering through their bustling downtown area or enjoying any of the numerous annual events held in town. There is certainly a sense of unity and consideration found throughout the town, and neighbors go out of their way to help one another.

Dining, Entertainment & Shopping

The culinary scene in Downers Grove is eclectic and adventurous, with a little bit of something for everyone. Chama Gaucha is a Brazilian steakhouse that serves guests in authentic style. You can expect your dinner to arrive on a large skewer, be carved for you at your table, and be seasoned to perfection each time you visit.

Another local favorite is the award-winning Parker’s Restaurant and Bar, which serves contemporary American cuisine. Here you can expect to find an array of dishes, including bouillabaisse, delectable Australian lamb chops, and a key lime pie that’s simply outstanding. The Honey-Jam Cafe is the go-to breakfast place in town, serving gourmet pancakes, world-class eggs benedict, and mouthwatering country fried steak and eggs. Make sure you try one of their famous shakes while you’re there. And no trip to Downers Grove would be complete without a visit to Pierce Tavern.

Things to Do

While Downers Grove residents can easily make their way into central Chicago, there are also several entertainment and recreational opportunities right in town. The Alter Brewing Company is a well-known local stomping ground that provides guests with one-of-a-kind drafts as well as a fantastic tasting of some of their best brews.

The Tivoli Theater, built in 1928, is still one of the main spots in town. It offers guests the best of both worlds—you can see all the latest films while basking in the comforts of this historic space.

Barth Pond is another great place to visit with your family. With more than 5 acres for guests to wander in, this community park also offers a large playground and picnic areas.

There is a distinct dedication to education in this community, and residents of Downers Grove take great pride in their highly-rated public and private schools. Some schools worth noting include:
